In the Garden

The first monograph from David V. D’Andrea is a selection of drawings spanning the last 15 years.

This book consists of the raw material for band posters ( OM, Wovenhand, Graveyard, and more) , self published collaborations with Steven R. Smith and Blood of the Black Owl, event flyers, skateboard graphics, the Ascend Ascend project with poet Janaka Stucky, the annual Samaritan Press calendar and more. All work was composed by hand utilizing India ink on wood panel.

David’s inspiration interweaves Hindu mythology , William Blake, the Pacific Northwest landscape, bible parables, hatha yoga,  turn of the century illustration, transcendental music, and the art of printmaking itself.

The garden is a place of heart-based inspiration and creativity. When I am in the garden the ideas flourish and drawings grow. ~DV

In the Garden transmutes ink into cosmic portals where primordial rhythms thrum with life, death, rebirth, and the liminal space between. David's masterful renderings invoke an archetypal ecology that speaks to the interconnectedness between the self and all things—from soil to snake to a starlit skull twinkling in the lap of god. Meditate on these works and be transformed.

~ Janaka Stucky , poet

“The somatic meets the transcendental in D’Andrea’s painstakingly constructed visual works. Vascular continuity flows between organic and spiritual forms by way of capillaries carrying ink, sap and blood. From the hard, saturnine clay of raw matter awaken phantasms cloaked in the otherworld. In this kinetic paradigm, the viewer embarks on a dynamic journey into the primordial wellspring that pours into the boundless seas. The traveler is nourished and imperiled in equal measure, following the glittering ocular current from the underworld to the heavens, through myriad lush intricacies, guided by gossamer elementals. D’Andrea is in this sense, both magician and navigator, evoking visions, charting the path to Gnosis with a deftly wielded pen.”

~ B. Vierling, artist
